Answer

ANo.2 As an English teacher it seems to me that, should you grade the latter student as high as the former, that you would be doing a disservice to that student. While improvement is admirable, the "real world" deals in absolute standards. In the business world, ones boss or clients seek perfection, and do not grade based on effort or improvement.

While the student might be happier with being graded for their effort in the short term, you would be teaching them to accept mediocrity as a viable outcome. The simple and sorry fact is that an 85, while a good improvement, is not as good as a 95.

If they can improve from a 55 to an 85, 10 more points shouldn't be that much harder!

Answer

ANo.1 This is difficult to say....

My question would be how you can measure/know if a student makes an effort. Teachers can't follow students around to their home and find out how much time they spend on doing homework. Therefore, when teachers grade, I think they have to count on something more concrete such as a test score.

So I would evaluate students using a concrete measurement. However, if I see a significant improve on a score from a student, I would consider giving extra points for that improvement.
